Networking – Requesting A Favour

30 12 2009

Happy New Year!

I am so glad I started blogging in 2009 and will celebrate my last post for the year by closing up the chapter on networking.

The crux of networking is this – we don’t network when we need to; we network so that when we need it, our network is already there.

Networking is about sincerity, and contribution, and building relationships. However, that does not give you the right to ask for a favour or help directly. Bear in mind that your contact may be put off by it. How would you feel if someone you had not seen nor heard from for decades calls you up asking for a favour?

So remember, there are some golden rules to adhere to:

  • Ask for his / her advice, views, and recommendations
  • Never expect the contact to offer you his / her help as though it is your right to it.
  • Never use a contact’s name without his or her permission.
  • Never betray the contact’s trust by revealing confidential or sensitive information which you have learned from him or her.
  • Start NOW – it is never too late to do it RIGHT!

Good luck, good health and Happy New Year 2010 to you!
